Which website builder is best for a small local business?

It depends on what the site has to do. If design is the product, Squarespace. If you want to build anything and add apps, Wix. If you want your domain, email and site from one company, GoDaddy. If you run a service business or a local shop and want bookings, a shop, invoices and stock in one flat price — filled in rather than designed — Business Lane.

Which is the cheapest?

To publish at all: GoDaddy’s Airo Starter at $9.99 a month billed yearly, for the first year; Wix Light at $17 a month billed yearly; Squarespace Basic at $19 a month billed yearly; and Business Lane’s Website plan at $20 a month, or about 17% less paid yearly. Once the site has to take bookings, Wix starts at $29 billed yearly and Squarespace needs Acuity on top of its plan, while Business Lane stays at $20.

Do any of them take a commission on sales?

Squarespace’s Basic plan takes 2% of online store sales; its other plans take none. Wix says it charges no extra transaction fee. Business Lane takes none on any plan. All of them still pass on a card processing fee, whichever payment provider you use.

Which ones include appointment booking?

Wix includes Wix Bookings from its Core plan. GoDaddy’s builder page lists bookings on Airo Professional. Squarespace needs Acuity Scheduling as a separate subscription. Business Lane includes appointment requests on both plans — customers ask for a time and you confirm it, rather than booking a slot outright.

Can I use my own domain with Business Lane?

Not directly yet. Every site lives at its own address on business-lane.com, with hosting and SSL included, and a domain you already own can be forwarded to it from your registrar. Wix, Squarespace and GoDaddy all connect your own domain on their paid plans today.
